For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Matt 18:20
Jesus taught us that the manifest presence of God answers to two or
three gathering together in Jesus name. This presence guarantees results in
prayer. If two can agree in prayer on earth, in the presence of the One who can
do all things, Jesus says whatever they dare to ask will be done for them by
our Father in heaven. Awesome!
I learnt this experientially early in my walk with God. In secondary
school, our final school term was wrapping up. We had been through the 3 years
of senior high with a lot of our friends who were not born again. We had an
overwhelming burden to lead them to Christ before we parted ways to various higher
institutions. That was when I first experienced the power in partnered prayer.
Every night, at about midnight, I would grab a friend or two and we would go
pray at the school football pitch. Holding hands, we would pick one or the
other of our unsaved classmates and pray for their salvation mentioning them by
name. The results were phenomenal. Hardened ‘niggers’ would break down crying
when we talked to them about Jesus the following day. I remember Justin*- one
of the toughest guys in the class who had thrown away religion and a
relationship with Jesus several years earlier. Smoking, drinking, partying,
hustling and illicit relationships were just a small part of the game. I
remember Chingtok (now the Senior Pastor at God-Life ministries) or Ayuba (now
serving God and the Nigerian nation in the military) and I, SS3 students at the
time with a zeal for God, praying for Justin* and taking his heart to Jesus
under the starry night sky. The next afternoon, we accosted him along one of
the Junior classroom corridors. I am not sure I had finished speaking up to 5
sentences when the burly ‘big boy’ broke down and began to cry. He surrendered
his heart to Jesus that day amidst heartfelt sobs. Everyone we prayed for made a decision for Jesus. The power of
partnered prayer!
The
power of agreement is a mystery.
